Vision
STATEMENT OF COMMITTEE PURPOSE, ORGANIZATION AND ACTIVITIES BRIDGE
Purpose: To advance the art, science, practice and profession of bridge engineering through open discussions, presentations, public and educational outreach,
cross-disciplinary communication and research into aspects of general or project-specific planning, design, fabrication, construction, materials, inspection, evaluation and testing, safety, performance, management, retrofitting, rehabilitation, repair and demolition issues; to foster and encourage a synthesis with the aims and efforts of other technical groups within the society; to encourage and develop cooperative participation with other regional and national technical and professional organizations undertaking similar aims
and efforts; to foster, stimulate and provide facility for the exchange and general dissemination of significant information relevant to bridge design and construction; and to encourage education and research necessary to the advancement of the bridge engineering art.
Organization: The membership will consist of all subscribing members of the Section who express written interest in participating in the group’s activities. From the initial
at-large membership, a planning committee will be established to promulgate and enact bylaws
and establish procedures and protocols and afterwards abolished. Various steering committees to guide various adopted activities will be established as-needed from the
at-large membership.
The group will be administered by a Chair and a Vice-Chair who are elected by the members and who are given the main responsibility for establishing and coordinating the group’s activities. The Chair will generally be responsible for establishing the year’s topics and activities and facilitating discussions; and the Vice Chair will generally perform the role of secretary, helping secure speakers and venues and disseminating information. A new Vice-Chair will be elected at the primary group meeting each year. The previous Vice-Chair will then assume the Chair position for that year.
Activities: Monthly programs of bridge engineering interest will be coordinated for presentation to the bridge engineering committee members. Topics and activities will be elicited from members and will include general discussions, presentations by members or
guest speakers, field trips, symposiums, workshops, public and educational outreach, participation in National Engineer’s Week, assistance in preparation of the annual Report Card and other as adopted. If so ordered by the members, the meetings will feature a catered lunch that will be served at some nominal charge to participants.
Information regarding the presentation topics, speakers and activities will be distributed electronically in advance of the meeting date to bridge engineering committee members, consultants, contractors, public and private agencies, educators, community leaders and other interested parties. If time permits, notice of the topics, speakers and/or activities will be submitted for announcement in the monthly Arizona Section ASCE Newsletter.
